The Vision Behind LabX’s Assistive Technology Internship
Assistive technology plays a transformative role in ensuring that individuals with disabilities lead independent, dignified lives. The need for innovation in this space has never been more pressing, particularly in countries like India, where a large population still lacks access to essential assistive devices. To address this need, LabX is proud to announce its Assistive Technology Internship Program for 2024, a forward-thinking initiative designed to empower the next generation of innovators.
The program aims to provide hands-on experience in creating life-changing tools and devices that cater to the unique challenges faced by people with disabilities.
LabX is committed to fostering a design culture that is not only creative but also deeply rooted in empathy. Through this internship, students will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, develop practical skills, and make a meaningful impact by addressing accessibility gaps.
The projects will span across critical areas such as dressing aids, eating utensils, food preparation tools, standing devices, ramps, and 3D-printed assistive devices.
Interns will be guided by experienced mentors and will engage in a process that includes research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and iteration, all while adhering to universal design and sustainability principles.
Why Assistive Technology is Crucial in India
In India, more than 26.8 million people live with disabilities, a statistic that accounts for 2.21% of the country’s population (Census 2011). However, access to assistive technology remains highly limited.
An estimated 90% of people with disabilities in India do not have access to the tools and devices they need to lead independent lives. The absence of affordable and accessible assistive technology has a cascading impact: without access to the right tools, individuals face significant barriers to education, employment, and basic self-sufficiency.
Assistive technology ranges from low-tech solutions like canes and walkers to high-tech innovations such as communication devices and motorized wheelchairs.
These technologies not only enable individuals to perform everyday tasks but also significantly improve their quality of life. In developing countries like India, the challenge lies in making these technologies affordable, sustainable, and accessible to everyone, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
At LabX, we recognize the urgency of this issue. We understand that the development of assistive technology in India must take into account factors like economic constraints, cultural nuances, and infrastructure gaps.
For this reason, our internship program focuses on creating innovative solutions that are cost-effective, scalable, and adapted to the unique needs of the Indian population.
By focusing on sustainability and user-centered design, we aim to create technologies that can be widely adopted, transforming lives in both urban and rural areas.
Personal Motivation: Why This Initiative Matters to Me
The LabX Assistive Technology Internship is not just another academic program—it is deeply personal to me. As an entrepreneur and someone passionate about creative problem-solving, I have always believed that the greatest innovations are those that address real-world challenges.
Assistive technology, for me, is one of the most impactful areas of design because it directly influences the independence, dignity, and quality of life of millions of people.
I have always admired the intersection of technology and empathy—where creativity meets human needs. Designing a product is not just about how it looks or functions, but about how it changes lives.
This internship is an opportunity to blend my passion for creative problem-solving with a genuine commitment to social good. Through this program, I want to give students the platform to channel their creativity into something that not only enhances their skills but also leaves a lasting legacy.
In my career, I have always championed the idea that design is not just art, but art with purpose. It should serve people, solve problems, and inspire progress.
Through this initiative, we can collectively take a small but significant step towards making the world more accessible for everyone. This is more than an internship—it is an invitation to join a movement where your ideas can have a tangible, measurable impact on real lives.
